#MentoringWalkNG – The Global Women’s Mentoring Walk is an annual event that involves established women leaders/professionals and emerging women leaders/professionals convening and walking together in their neighbourhoods and city streets.
As they walk, they engage in discussions regarding life goals, challenges and successes; issues bordering on family, relationships, education, business, career and plans for the future, are discussed. The concept of this Walk originated from American media icon, founder and former CEO of Oxygen Media, Geraldine Laybourne, who launched mentoring walks to empower young women professionals in New York City and across the United States.
The aim of the Global Mentoring Walk is to help rising women leaders achieve their goals and reach their full potential. It underscores the value of women’s leadership and exemplifies the transformative impact women have when they come together to promote positive change throughout the world. Since its inception in 2008, the Global Women’s Mentoring Walk initiative has reached thousands of women leaders in Africa, Eurasia and Latin America.
It holds on the 3rd Saturday of November in over twenty countries and is tailored to fit the specific needs of each locale.
In 2008, Lucy Kanu, of Idea Builders Initiative took this idea global and has since led the Global Mentoring Walk in Nigeria alongside other women leaders in different countries, themed ‘Walking to Inspire’. The Global Mentoring Walks are a direct outcome of the FORTUNE/US State Department Global Women Leaders Mentoring Partnership in collaboration with Vital Voices and Idea Builders Initiative.
Idea Builders Initiative is a leading non-profit organization working specifically with women & girls to live lives of choice by inspiring, engaging and equipping them to transform their lives and become change agents in society. The organisation strives to deliver this mission by inspiring leadership ideals and fostering programmes that advance causes directly affecting Women & Girls.
On November 21 2015, several established Nigerian women leaders will be matched with young professionals to engage in dialogue as they walk and talk. This year’s Walk will only take place in one location which is Gbagada, sponsored by Nestle.
