As 2016 comes to a close, and with all the rush to meet set goals for the year, despite the “recession” and economic downturn Nigeria has been riddled with, there lurks the great tendency for “avoidable accidents” and unnecessary loss of lives and properties to occur.
In view of these traits usually associated with the “Ember period” as it is popularly known, a group of young Nigerian entrepreneurs have taken up the social responsibility of raising awareness on the major challenges of road safety and influencing factors behind road accidents and carnage.
The exercise which is inspired by the “Safety first, Safety Always” slogan of the Nikky Taurus transport and logistics company, was activated by the Majestro Consults group of the Next Titan entrepreneurial reality TV show in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), the Nigerian Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.
The target beneficiaries are road users at large, with key focus on the identified key beneficiaries such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers (N.U.R.T.W), private road users and pedestrians.
The line-up of activities to promote the social cause of road safety included a live facebook event hosted on the Cool FM facebook community, several radio and TV tour at peak audience periods, pasting of safety awareness stickers, forum and cluster rallies facilitated by the FRSC.
A major feature of the awareness campaign was the adoption of the on-going social media trend called the #MannequinChallenge which saw the team display a no-word campaign wearing road signs with taped lips at 3 major traffic locations across the city of Lagos, in a bid to drive home the safety message as well as activate a brand re-call in the minds of drivers and pedestrians at large.
Safety is an attitude and the core objective is to advocate for a positive behavioral change amongst Nigerian road users. Nikky Taurus as a transport and logistics brand of over 20 years in operation has proven that low road incident is a possibility with the right attitude and promotion of the right corporate values, ethics and management installations.
2016 no matter how tough it has been economically for us as a nation needs to end on a better note. As long as there is life, there is hope, and with collective effort of all road users we can make it into 2017.
